Explore the Forrest Caves on Phillip Island

At low tide, water is forced out of the Forrest Caves, revealing a unique adventure opportunity on Phillip Island. Erosion caused by the Bass Strait’s heavy wave action has produced two rather large caverns right on the beach. They’re perfect for exploring as they become easily accessible at low tide. Inside the Forrest Caves is an epic place to hang out, explore and snap a few pics. The beach is a popular surf break amongst the locals. It is well known for it’s surfing conditions on Christmas day in 2013; 8-10 ft barrels were seen peeling along this coast-line.

“The Forrest Caves beach is nothing short of pristine and yet we had this whole place to ourselves. @rosiebartle tagged along to catch the sunset. The tide was low but even still waves were pushing into the caves. We ditched the shoes and made a run for it. The caves aren’t huge but it’s still dark & moist inside. We hung out here for almost an hour just watching the waves crash into the rocks before taking a few flicks as the sun went down for them sweet golden vibes.”

Getting There

1. Travel towards the Forrest Caves car park
2. The turn off for the Phillip Island caves lies between Cape Woolamai and Surf Beach.
3. Once you arrive in the car park, take the stairs up and over the sand dunes.
4. Walk left at the bottom of the stairs for 500 metres and arrive at the Forrest Caves.

Best Conditions

Sunset. All year round. Must visit at low tide. Check out Surf Beach tide times before visiting.

Skill Level

Easy. 700m sandy walk both up and down stairs.

What to bring?
