Double-knot the laces, it’s time to discover Phillip Island’s natural beauty on these amazing walks.
See caves, a shipwreck, huge granite columns and jaw-dropping seascapes.
1. The Pinnacles at Cape Woolamai
- Distance: 3.6km return (allow 90 minutes)
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Start and finish: Cape Woolamai Surf Lifesaving Club
The Pinnacles can be reached directly without completing the full walk around Cape Woolamai. 600 metres on the sand, stairs up to the cliff top and a further 1.2-kilometres around to the lookout point.
The views from the lookout are worthy of a post card. Waves crash in on the huge granite columns and the sun sets directly behind the formation. More photos and directions here.
2. Cape Woolamai Coastal Walk
- Distance: 8.5km loop (allow 3 hours)
- Difficulty: Moderate/Difficult
- Start and finish: Cape Woolamai Surf Lifesaving Club
Hike the 8.5-kilometre Cape Woolamai walk to reach the highest point on Phillip Island. Pass by an old granite quarry, stunning lookout points, sea caves and The Pinnacles rock formation. The walk does involve two sets of stairs, soft sandy sections and a gentle climb but it is not overly strenuous. More detailed information here.
3. Forrest Caves
- Distance: 1.4km return (allow 60 minutes)
- Difficulty: Easy
- Start and finish: Forrest Caves car park
A gentle stroll to the Forrest Caves; beach-side caves formed by heavy seas from the South. Visit at low tide to gain access to the main cavern. It is completely hollow and tall enough to stand. Up and over the stairs and just a further 500 metres along the beach. Find out more here.
4. SS Speke Shipwreck
- Distance: 1.8km return (allow 60 minutes)
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Start and finish: Kitty Miller Bay car park
900-metre walk around Kitty Miller Bay to the wreck of the SS Speke that ran aground in 1906. The ship was originally 90 metres long but only the bow of the ship remains intact today. Expect unstable rocks and a steep hill. Directions and more information here.
5. George Bass Coastal Walk
- Distance: 7km one way (allow 2 hours)
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Start: End of Punch Bowl Road in San Remo
- Finish: Kilcunda
The George Bass Coastal Walk is a cliff top trail between San Remo and Kilcunda on the mainland. The walk offers stunning panoramic views of the Bass Straight and the rugged coastline. The track is well maintained and is relatively flat. Save the return walk and park a car at the Shelley Beach car park before commencing the walk at the Southern end of Punch Bowl Road.
6. Pyramid Rock to Berrys Beach
- Distance: 5km return (allow 90 minutes)
- Difficulty: Easy
- Start: Pyramid Rock
- Finish: Berrys Beach
Easy walk atop cliffs on the South shore of Phillip Island. Park at Pyramid Rock car park and walk West towards the lesser-known Berrys Beach. Keep an eye out for wallabies along the trail too.
7. Rhyll Inlet Wetland Boardwalk
- Distance: 1.2km return (allow 20 minutes)
- Difficulty: Very Easy
- Start and finish: Conservation Hill
See another side to Phillip Island as you “walk on water” through the Rhyll wetlands. A picturesque boardwalk commences at Conservation Hill and loops back to the start. This walk is also suitable for bicycles. Follow these directions.
8. Churchill Island North Point Loop
- Distance: 2.5km loop (allow 45 minutes)
- Difficulty: Easy
- Start and finish: Churchill Island Heritage Farm
Churchill Island is a heritage farm accessed by another bridge from Phillip Island. The island is accessible from 10AM – 5PM each day and it is free to access the trails. This walk is also suitable for bicycles. Follow these directions.
9. San Remo: Cadillac Canyon and Panhandle Flats
- Distance: 1km estimate (allow 30 minutes)
- Difficulty: Easy
- Start and finish: Potters Hill Road car park
Take the stairs down onto Bore Beach in San Remo. Cadillac Canyon at the West and Panhandle Flats at the East of the beach are both intriguing rock formations. Great for photography or just an easy stroll. Park at the Southern end of Potters Hill Road.
10. Nobbies Centre to Summerlands via The Blvd
- Distance: 2.8km one way (allow 45 minutes)
- Difficulty: Easy
- Start: Nobbies Centre
- Finish: Summerlands Lookout
Walk the windy, unsealed road from the Nobbies Centre to the Summerlands lookout. This section is some of Phillip Island’s harshest coastline; expect to see blowholes, caves and rock platforms. The Boulevard is an unsealed road with many potholes. You could choose to drive, ride a bike or walk.
11. San Remo Coastal Walk
- Distance: 1.2km return (allow 30 minutes)
- Difficulty: Easy
- Start and finish: Lions Park car park
Easy walk down onto San Remo’s dog friendly beach before heading up stairs to continue further South on the cliffs. At the end of the trail you’ll find a lookout with a picture-perfect view back towards Cape Woolamai. Begin the walk at Lions Park.
