A little curiosity. A longer way home.
Humble Trail began with an idea on a return flight: a place to share the Australian outdoors and help more people get out into it. In March 2016, Matt Charlesworth and Rosie Bartle turned that idea into this publication.
The places that drew them outside still run through our pages: a waterfall at the end of a walking track, a stretch of coast worth stopping for, a small town that deserves more than a glance through the car window. Humble Trail gave those places a home, through stories and photographs that readers could use to plan an adventure of their own.

From outdoor stories to everyday discoveries
Over time, writers and photographers brought their own interests to Humble Trail. Walking tracks and road trips were joined by places to eat, neighbourhood discoveries and ideas for a weekend away. Matt and Rosie later stepped back, passing the publication to an editorial team that continues to build on those beginnings.
Today, our coverage reaches beyond Australia, with travel planning, cruise guides, scenic drives and lifestyle stories alongside our Australian archive. The questions have grown with us: where could we go next, what should we know before we leave, and which details will make the trip better?
A Note from our Founders, Matt and Rosie:

“From a simple idea on a return flight, to a beacon for outdoor enthusiasts, Humble Trail has been our dream brought to life. As we step back, we entrust this dream to capable hands – a team committed to guiding Humble Trail with the same passion and vision. We are excited for the future, as Humble Trail continues to inspire and connect people with the extraordinary beauty of Australia.” – Matt & Rosie
Our Mission
We want to help you find places worth your time and feel better prepared to explore them. That might mean a short walk close to home, a road trip with room for a detour, or a journey you have been planning for years.
Our aim is to offer useful detail, explain the basis of our recommendations and be clear when a story reflects opinion. We also encourage readers to respect the places they visit and the people who call them home. You can read more about our approach in our editorial policy.
