Editor's note: This article is an opinion piece based on publicly available traveler reviews, official policies and industry reporting we found online.
A grand old hotel in December sells two different things: a lobby anyone can walk into for free, and a room upstairs that costs far more than it does in March. This ranking judges the room by what the hotel actually programs for the people who stay.
The order runs from stays that reward a peak rate down to hotels where a day visit delivers most of the magic. The verdicts are opinion, drawn from each hotel’s own 2026 holiday pages and from patterns in public reviews rather than our own stays; where a 2026 calendar was not yet published in early October, we say so.
1. The Greenbrier, White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia

The Greenbrier’s Christmas is a full week rather than one lit tree. The 2026 schedule runs December 23 through 29, from photos with Santa on the 23rd to The Nutcracker on the 28th and 29th at $25 per adult and $15 per child. Christmas schedule
Why it ranks first: much of the daily program costs nothing beyond the room. Family bingo, a reindeer fun run, a scavenger hunt and the entertainment show are complimentary for registered guests, and the paid sessions run from a $45 tea to a $55-to-$125 Season’s Greetings dinner.
Every activity requires a reservation, and the popular ones can fill before Christmas week begins, so book them when you book the room.
2. Mohonk Mountain House, New Paltz, New York

Mohonk’s Victorian Holidays season runs November 28, 2026 through January 3, 2027, with three meals a day included in the rate. Victorian Holidays The Christmas Day grand buffet comes with the room; day visitors pay $171.50 per adult and $86.25 per child plus tax, reserved 28 days ahead. Holiday dining
What fills the days: a Winter Lights walk, a tour of the decorated trees, skating in the open-air pavilion, Nutcracker performances on November 29, December 4 and 20, and A Christmas Carol on three December dates.
A family of four buying that buffet as day visitors would pay more than $500 before tax; overnight guests have already paid for it in the rate.
3. The Omni Homestead Resort, Hot Springs, Virginia

The Homestead’s season begins with a ritual. Staff carry a 23-foot Fraser fir through the Great Hall doors while guests cheer, then light it during Thanksgiving week; in 2025 the tree arrived November 24 and was lit November 26. Holiday preview
Christmas week itself leans on old-fashioned things: ice skating, carriage rides, s’mores by the fire, gingerbread decorating, bourbon tastings, family bingo and bedtime stories read by Santa’s elves. Omni’s Santa’s Landing rooms add holiday decor and a $100 credit. Omni holiday program
As of early October the resort had not published its 2026 calendar, so treat the 2025 pattern as the guide, and remember that the tree lighting falls weeks before Christmas.
4. The Jefferson Hotel, Richmond, Virginia

The Jefferson treats the season as a public exhibition with a paid inner ring. A 30-foot tree fills the Rotunda, and the gingerbread display is unveiled Monday, November 30, 2026 and stays through January 3, 2027. Holidays at The Jefferson
New for 2026: walk-in viewing runs only from 5 p.m. Sunday to 4 p.m. Friday; from Friday afternoon to Sunday evening you need a tea, dining or room reservation to be inside, a rule overnight guests sidestep.
Holiday tea costs $64 per adult, the weekend Chocolate Lover’s tea $68 and the Santa teas on December 5 and 17 $85, with reservations opening October 7. Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve at Lemaire had already sold out when we checked.
5. The Broadmoor, Colorado Springs, Colorado

The Broadmoor loads its program into late December. Its 12 Days of Christmas runs December 21 through January 1 with a different activity each day, from baking demonstrations to fireside storytime. Christmas at The Broadmoor The Holiday Show, a three-course dinner with a variety performance, is set for December 18, 19 and 24, 2026. Events calendar
The tradition behind it: about a million white lights across the grounds and a ten-foot gingerbread display unveiled on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Tradition overview
The splurge works if your dates fall inside the 12 Days. Early December buys the lights and the lobby but not the daily program, so check the calendar before booking.
6. The Hotel Hershey, Hershey, Pennsylvania

Hershey’s Christmas is built for three generations at once. The hotel lights its tree on the Friday evening of Thanksgiving weekend, 7 to 8:30 p.m., with hot cocoa, carnival games and the Hershey Characters pulling the switch at 8. Thanksgiving week 2026 guide
The package logic: holiday rates bundle daily Hersheypark Christmas Candylane tickets with breakfast, and a shuttle runs to the park gate. Last season the weekend Breakfast with Santa cost $65 per adult and $53 per child. 2025 holiday guide
In public reviews this stay reads best from grandparents traveling with grandchildren; the complaints come from couples who expected a hushed adult Christmas. Decide which trip you are taking before you book.
7. Fairmont Olympic Hotel, Seattle, Washington

The Fairmont Olympic earns its place with pricing rather than spectacle. From November 1 to December 31, 2026, every second night is complimentary, which blunts the peak-rate problem that sinks other entries here. Holiday season page
What you walk into: the Seattle Festival of Trees fills the lobby from November 16 to December 1, free to the public, and the Teddy Bear Suite opens November 27 through December 25 with nearly 100 bears and a donation box for Seattle Children’s.
The teas are where the money goes: the Nutcracker Tea en Pointe on November 29 and December 6 costs $170 plus a 20 percent gratuity per person. Pick one tea and the stay still comes out ahead.
8. The Ahwahnee, Yosemite National Park, California

The Ahwahnee’s Christmas is one dinner. The Bracebridge Dinner, a theatrical old-England feast staged here since 1927, returns for its 99th season on eight nights between December 8 and 22, 2026, and attendance is no longer by lottery. Bracebridge calendar
Know the rules: formal attire is required and costumes are not, phones and cameras are banned inside, and children under ten are not recommended because of the dinner’s length. Tickets are sold separately from rooms. Event details
This is a once-in-a-lifetime splurge rather than a repeatable Christmas. The drive in can be part of the vacation, but outside the dinner nights the holiday program is modest.
9. Omni Mount Washington Resort, Bretton Woods, New Hampshire

The Mount Washington’s holiday strength is New Year’s week. On December 31, 2026 the resort serves a grand buffet at $125 per adult and $40 per child under ten, a five-course dinner in the 1902 dining room at $150 and a Bretton Arms dinner at $185, with fireworks at 10 p.m. New Year’s celebration
Guests only: these events are restricted to overnight guests and club members, which keeps the ballroom from becoming a public party.
Christmas-week specifics for 2026 were not posted when we checked; past seasons listed Santa sleigh rides on December Saturdays, and the Cog Railway next door is one of the scenic train rides retirees rate for the view.
10. Hotel del Coronado, Coronado, California

Skating by the Sea puts a rink on the sand from November 20, 2026 through January 3, 2027, in 90-minute sessions with skates included, and the Frostbite Lounge rents rink-side seats by a fire pit; 2026 ticket prices were not yet posted. Skating by the Sea
The dining calendar is set: a Thanksgiving buffet, a Victorian Tea December 18 to 22, a Christmas Eve buffet and a Christmas Day brunch, all in the Crown Room. Holidays at the Del
The rink and lights are public, so overnight guests share them with every San Diego day visitor. The Crown Room meals are the reason to stay; a quieter beach Christmas waits in the coastal small towns up the road.
11. The Hotel Roanoke, Roanoke, Virginia

Roanoke makes the list for value rather than extravagance. Fashions for Evergreens fills the hotel with more than 35 competing trees from local businesses and nonprofits, free to the public from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day. Fashions for Evergreens 2026
How the voting works: you vote with dollars for United Way, and a $10 donation enters a sweepstakes for a night with breakfast for two, drawn January 10, 2027.
The 2026 calendar adds $25 holiday portraits by the lobby tree on December 1 and 2 and a Christmas dinner show on December 2. Holiday calendar Pair a night here with a Blue Ridge drive and the weekend does not depend on a resort rate.
12. The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa, Riverside, California

The Mission Inn’s Festival of Lights is the biggest program here and the hardest to enjoy from a room. More than 10 million lights switch on at the opening ceremony on November 21, 2026, with fireworks and Santa, and the display runs nightly through January 3, 2027. Festival of Lights
Why it sits mid-list: the festival is a free civic event that draws large crowds to the surrounding sidewalks, and anyone staying inside the attraction shares its parking and restaurant queues every evening.
If you winter in Southern California, as many snowbirds over 70 now do, visit on a weeknight in early December and keep the hotel budget for somewhere quieter.
13. The Inn on Biltmore Estate, Asheville, North Carolina

Christmas at Biltmore runs November 3, 2026 through January 10, 2027, with Candlelight Christmas Evenings through January 9, and the Inn sits on the estate itself. Christmas at Biltmore
Read the ticket structure first: the candlelight evenings need a separate reservation-only ticket from daytime admission, and lodging is a third purchase. The candlelight ticket does include a same-day or next-day visit to the gardens, Antler Hill Village and the winery. Candlelight details
The stay pays if you will tour the house by candlelight and return the next day, because the Inn removes the drive. As a one-night stop it is overrated, and the North Carolina small towns nearby make a cheaper base.
14. The Omni Grove Park Inn, Asheville, North Carolina

The Grove Park’s National Gingerbread House Competition, now in its 34th year, puts hundreds of edible entries on display from November 17, 2026 through January 3, 2027. Competition display
The access rules decide the verdict. Non-guests may view the display Monday through Thursday and after 6 p.m. on Sundays; Fridays and Saturdays are reserved for overnight guests and diners, and it closes to the public on Thanksgiving, December 6, December 23 to 26, December 30 and 31, and January 1.
A weekend stay is the splurge that pays, because you see the gingerbread without the weekday lobby crush; a midweek stay at the same rate buys the crowded lobby the disappointed reviews describe.
15. The Roosevelt New Orleans, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel

The Roosevelt’s own page still shows last season in its block-long lobby: Teddy Bear Tea on dates from November 30 through December 27, a Réveillon menu from December 1 to New Year’s Eve, and a Blue Room pop-up bar from December 19 to 27, free to the public. Holidays at The Roosevelt
What was new: pastry chef Kareena Dennis added a life-size chocolate Nutcracker beside the life-size gingerbread house. The 2026 page had not replaced it when we checked.
The lobby, the gingerbread and the pop-up bar cost nothing, which is why the overnight rate ranks here. The building earned its place among historic hotels worth every extra dollar; the Christmas show is mostly free.
16. Omni Bedford Springs Resort, Bedford, Pennsylvania

Bedford Springs has turned a decorative gingerbread house into a structure. Executive pastry chef Harshal Naik, a Food Network Holiday Baking Championship alumnus, built last year’s 11-foot display from nearly 400 pounds of dough, more than 5,000 bricks and 50 gallons of royal icing. Holiday report
The town joins in: Santa leads the Grand Illumination countdown for a tree in the roundabout outside the hotel, townspeople beside guests, and Breakfast at the North Pole seats visiting families.
It is a pleasant small-town Christmas that photographs beautifully. It ranks here because the 2026 program was unpublished when we checked, and because the gingerbread stands at a main entrance anyone can walk up to.
17. Fairmont San Francisco, San Francisco, California

The Fairmont lights its life-sized gingerbread house on Saturday, November 21, 2026 at 11 a.m., with the San Francisco Boys Chorus singing, and a Carousel Bar serves in the lobby through December 31. Festive season 2026
Where it tips into overrated: themed teas in Laurel Court run $130.80 to $262.80 per person, and a seat inside the gingerbread house is sold as an $800-value add-on with a $1,000 food and beverage minimum, for a house visible from the lobby for free.
Book the Santa Suite if small grandchildren will remember breakfast for four and a gingerbread kit; otherwise a lobby walk and one drink at the Carousel Bar is most of what the room buys.
18. Historic Hotel Bethlehem, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Bethlehem’s hotel has one gesture no other entry can copy. From Christmas Eve through Christmas night the rooftop sign goes partly dark so only BETHLEHEM glows above the Moravian church steps, a 1950s custom managing partner Bruce Haines revived in 2018. Sign tradition
The program around it belongs to the city. Christkindlmarkt runs November 13 through December 20, 2026. Christmas City 2026 The hotel’s events page listed no 2026 holiday dinners when we checked.
So it ranks low as a splurge: you pay a Christmas City rate to sleep inside the postcard, yet the market, the sign and the carols are enjoyed from the sidewalk, and a room a few miles out costs less.
19. The Peabody Memphis, Memphis, Tennessee

The Peabody’s Duck Days of Christmas runs November 21 through December 31, 2026, wrapping the duck march in gingerbread and a tall tree. Peabody events Pastry chef Konrad Spitzbart’s eleven “elves” build the gingerbread village from more than a hundred pounds of flour. Gingerbread village
The one exclusive is the tree lighting, which in 2025 ran on the Friday after Thanksgiving, 3 to 6 p.m., for hotel guests only. 2025 ceremony
Everything else on the ground floor is free to anyone walking in from Union Avenue, and the December lobby can be standing room only. Our list of historic hotels people regret booking covered the rooms; here, come for the ducks and sleep elsewhere.
20. The Brown Palace Hotel, Denver, Colorado

The Brown Palace’s Champagne Cascade has opened Denver’s holiday season since 1987: a pyramid of several thousand Baccarat glasses with just two bottles poured from the top, since filling every tier would take about 70 cases. Hotel traditions
What 2026 costs: the pour is listed for Sunday, November 8. Tickets run from $235 for brunch at Ellyngton’s to $412 with a balcony spot to $1,179 for one of 35 floor seats with Dom Pérignon, and part of each ticket goes to the Denver Rescue Mission. Ticket listing
The pour lasts minutes, and $235 and up for a seat at it, in a lobby that serves afternoon tea all year, is where overrated begins; spend the difference in the Colorado small towns an hour west.
21. The Plaza, New York, New York

The Plaza closes the ranking because its Christmas is the most expensive version of what New York offers free a block away. Afternoon tea in the Palm Court is the other holiday draw, and it is a table reservation rather than part of a room booking. The Palm Court
The signature upsell: the Suitest Season of All package puts a decorated seven-foot tree, flowers and a welcome gift in your suite through December 26, 2026. Holidays at The Plaza
The problem is proportion. The tree in your suite is the premium, while the park is outside the door and the Palm Court seats anyone with a reservation. In our reading of public reviews, the satisfied guests booked for the room itself and the disappointed ones expected a program.
Every hotel here looks wonderful in December, which is why the ranking rests on what the overnight rate adds to the lobby. Where the program is built for guests, the splurge holds; where the magic is free to anyone who walks in, book the tea and sleep where the money works harder.
